Interview

1. What are some great tips you can share about drawing?
1. Draw every day. I guess you can call it the whole “practice makes perfect thing” and just doodling on papers you get in class or at work makes a difference.
2. When you hit a tough spot: KEEP DRAWING. When this happens, it usually means you’re going through a style change or a developmental phase in your artwork. Some people draw less during this phase since it’s no longer a leisure for them but that’s the period you want to draw the most since it’ll be where you improve the most.

2. When did you first start to draw manga?
Seventh Grade.

3. Name the greatest influence on your manga.
Yuu Watase, hands down. Unfortunately, it’s become quite apparent when people read my stuff. XD But that’s just art style. Storywise, I’m going to have to think about it. I guess just little stuff I’ve learned about do’s-and-don’ts that I’ve learned from writing I try to apply in my mangas. Especially character wise. I try to keep the whole random humor and shoujo romance going but I try to keep things as realistic as possible.

4. Has DREAM been helpful to you in any way?
Of course! Great community, great people, and definitely helped me dedicate more time to my manga.

5. What was the first manga you ever bought for yourself?
Oh gosh...um...I think Chobits by Clamp. If you mean LITERALLY bought myself, then it would be Mink by Megumi Tachikawa (so kawaii!!).

6. Name the pens you use for drawing manga and how you use them. If you ink digitally, name the sizes and types of brushes you use and how you use them.
I usually don’t use pens for my comics lately. They’re really expensive and I’d prefer to begin using them when I’ve gained more experience. But the few times I used them, I use a 005 Micron pen for outlining all the people, quotes, and buildings. For things that need a thicker outline (such as eyes, male eyebrows, quote that need emphasis, some comical faces), I use a 03 Micron pen. When I’ve done the initial outlining, I go over them again to accent the shadows and make the lineart more interesting (so I run out of pens quickly >.<). After I finish outlining, I’ll scan it onto the computer and after I’ve finished adjusting the color (this goes for both pen and pencil outlining), I fill in all the big areas requiring black (clothing, hair, buildings, some effect panels) with the black paint bucket. I make all my lines for panels on the computer with the line tool and their sizes vary per panel but it‘s usually 10px.

7. How long does it take you to do one page from planning to toning and lettering?
A few days. I usually plan way in advance so I’m usually thinking of a page about a few weeks prior to drawing it. Then I usually sketch a few pages in groups so I can organize the panels properly. Then outlining, toning, and lettering 1 page takes about a day.

8. What is the average length of your mangas?
Around 180 pages per volume and between 40-60 pages per chapter.

9. After this manga, what type of manga would you like to draw next?
Still deciding. It’ll either be a yaoi or another shoujo.

10. What inspired you to draw manga?
It was in seventh grade. I saw some of my friends drawing a joint comic together so I decided to try it as well.

11. When did you first start to draw manga?
Look back at number 2. ;]

12. Who do you say gave you the most support while drawing manga?
My friends; for sure. And random people, like teachers, who caught me drawing in public. xD

13. Do you want to draw manga as a living?
Not as a main career choice, but no matter what job I choose, I do intend to publish manga for fun.

14. Do you prefer traditional or computerized when it comes to coloring?
Computerized. I like the whole layer thing. It makes it easier to fix mistakes. Though, I do like the texture feel of traditional but I’m too lazy and poor to use it often. xD

15. Have you ever tried to promote your manga in any way? Name some please.
Yes, on Top Comics, Deviantart, Smackjeeves, Comicfury, MangaBullet, and Drunkduck.

16. Was there ever a period of time where you completely stopped drawing manga for any reason?
As in my stories: yes. School is a priority for me, but drawing sketches and/or doodling: no. It’s just second nature for me.

17. Do you usually know the ending of your manga before you begin? Do you enjoy knowing/not knowing the ending?
Initially: not always. But I usually figure it out within the first few pages. I do a lot of plot out-linings and character sheets before starting so a majority is figured out but the ending is always subject to change. And, yes and no to enjoying not knowing. Sometimes It’s fun to figure out along the way or it’s not a big deal if I know yet or not, while other times it’s crucial that I know the ending to plot other stuff in the story.

18. Out of all your series, which one do you feel closest to? Please describe it in a few sentences.
I’m assuming this includes ones I haven’t begun drawing yet. In which case, it would be a (still nameless xD) joint comic with one of my friends. We have been working on it since middle school and was the first and longest comic I’ve ever been a part of. It has to do with 7 elements, reincarnations, hide-n-go-seek preist/preistesses, an assassin who’s afraid of bugs, and a girl finding a life from a book.

19. Have you ever done a doujinshi? Which series was it based on?
No. In fact, I’ve never heard of that term until I joined this site. XD Fan-comics would just seem...awkward cause I wouldn’t be as emotionally attached to the characters. And I would have to be careful of the plot cause it wouldn’t be as fun otherwise. Basically, it seems like a lot of work to pull off properly.

20. Which of your characters do you like the most?
Aww man...this is tough. From Doppelganger, it would be Toru because he’s the most introverted character in the entire series and goes through the largest development of character throughout the series. But out of all my comics thus far, it would be a tie between Shuya (Drinking Perfume) and Isamu (Soulless). They’re both (in my opinion), the most realistic characters out of all my series and both bring an emotional aspect to the series, they’re a part of, in their own way.
