Interview

1. What are some great tips you can share about drawing?
It's age old, but seriously...practice, practice...and some more practice. Don't expect to be drawing full scenery straight out of the gate. It's so frustrating, taking it slow...practicing. But the more time you spend practicing, the less work you'll have to do on the back end.

2. When did you first start to draw manga?
Manga specifically only a couple years ago. It took a few attempts to get the hang of it...but I think I'm finally to the point where I'm making professional quality work.

3. Name the greatest influence on your manga.
Probably Aria manga. I love the story, but no matter your taste it's undeniable how beautiful the art is...it's something I strive for, with every page I create.

4. Has DREAM been helpful to you in any way?
Well, I'm so new to it that's kind of impossible. Everyone I've met so far has been very kind...so I imagine it will.

5. What was the first manga you ever bought for yourself?
With my own money...Fushigi Yuugi volume 2 (I borrowed #1), 8th grade. LOL

6. Name the pens you use for drawing manga and how you use them. If you ink digitally, name the sizes and types of brushes you use and how you use them.
I ink digitally, because it's cheaper. I always use your basic round brush, between 1 and 3 px in size. The cleaner the lines the better.

7. How long does it take you to do one page from planning to toning and lettering?
It's hard to guesstimate...because I work in more...mass produced factory fashion..LOL but, I'd say I've trimmed it to less than 4h a page.

8. What is the average length of your mangas?
I've never finished one, but...my smaller project (Pieces of Broken Glass) will be 3 chapters...Soul Guardian will be a minimum of 8.

9. After this manga, what type of manga would you like to draw next?
Hmm...I'm not sure. Maybe an epic fantasy.

10. What inspired you to draw manga?
I love telling stories. I started with writing (I'm currently trying to get my 600 page modern fantasy novel published) and then moved on to telling stories through drawings.

11. When did you first start to draw manga?
Manga specifically only a couple years ago. It took a few attempts to get the hang of it...but I think I'm finally to the point where I'm making professional quality work.

12. Who do you say gave you the most support while drawing manga?
My very dear friend. No one was more excited or pestered me more for new pages. Sometimes I wanted to throw things at him.

13. Do you want to draw manga as a living?
If I could make a decent living at it I'd love to. Otherwise...naaaah.

14. Do you prefer traditional or computerized when it comes to coloring?
As far as toning goes, digital is MUCH easier, although it's hard finding good quality tones...

15. Have you ever tried to promote your manga in any way? Name some please.
Just through internet means...and word of mouth. Deviant Art, Smack Jeeves...Google, StumbleUpon, although it's very difficult.

16. Was there ever a period of time where you completely stopped drawing manga for any reason?
Oh definitely. I'd get frustrated with not being able to draw what I envisioned and eventually quit. But I always came back to it... I've redrawn the beginning of Soul Guardian...maybe four times, and I'm FINALLY satisfied.

17. Do you usually know the ending of your manga before you begin? Do you enjoy knowing/not knowing the ending?
Usually, yes. It takes extra work, but I think it helps. (Most people desperately need direction.) I look at it like travel, you need to know your destination to get started, but the excitement is in the journey itself.

18. Out of all your series, which one do you feel closest to? Please describe it in a few sentences.
That's VERY hard to decide, because I've been working on Soul Guardian and Pieces for so long. Probably Pieces though...as it's a prequel that sets up the story for my novel.

19. Have you ever done a doujinshi? Which series was it based on?
I'd really enjoy an Aria doujinshi? I can't draw water well enough though...or gondola...

20. Which of your characters do you like the most?
Oh that's too hard...I remember reading an interview with Watase-san, and she'd been asked that question...and she said it was impossible to pick because they're all like her children. I wouldn't go that far though. LOL
