Interview

1. What are some great tips you can share about drawing?
Patience is a virtue. Practice, practice, practice and you’ll get better. There's no magic in art, the more you do it, the better you get. I still have a long ways to go before I can call myself good at it.

2. When did you first start to draw manga?
"Duh!!" is my first one… I drew character sketches of countless of other projects from the past, but nothing got off the ground.

3. Name the greatest influence on your manga.
Tokyo Crazy Paradise.

4. Has DREAM been helpful to you in any way?
I think the concept of DREAM is awesome. It is a really nice community and a great way to motivate one to continue drawing.

5. What was the first manga you ever bought for yourself?
Dragonball Volume 05

6. Name the pens you use for drawing manga and how you use them. If you ink digitally, name the sizes and types of brushes you use and how you use them.
I draw on regular letter sized paper. Then, because I'm lazy, I ink on tracing paper so I don't have to erase anything. I use a black liquid pen, its like ball point, except the contents are not oil based, I believe. I buy them in bulk at Grand and Toy.

7. How long does it take you to do one page from planning to toning and lettering?
Way too long. I usually plan out a whole chapter, then draw them, then ink, then tone them in batch, so it's hard to gauge the time. But I'd say 1.5-2 hours.

8. What is the average length of your mangas?
Since Duh!! Is my first and only project, and it's really really long, I have no idea. I anticipate Duh!! to be at least 4 to 6 180 page volumes.

9. After this manga, what type of manga would you like to draw next?
I've got a whole repertoire of projects waiting to be drawn. The next one will likely be an action/adventure based story as opposed to romance/comedy of "Duh!!".

10. What inspired you to draw manga?
All the manga I've read inspired me. I want to be able to tell stories too. I think I do it better with pictures than with words.

11. When did you first start to draw manga?
I started drawing manga, or at least the style, about 7 years ago. Grade 9-ish.

12. Who do you say gave you the most support while drawing manga?
Myself. My friends and family don't really know (or care) for my little projects. But that’s because I have many weird hobbies (I'm also a juggler and currently learning to ride the unicycle)

13. Do you want to draw manga as a living?
I would most likely starve to death. So no. I will continue to do it as a hobby. If it goes anywhere, great, if not, that's ok.

14. Do you prefer traditional or computerized when it comes to coloring?
Computerized. I have never tried traditional toning.

15. Have you ever tried to promote your manga in any way? Name some please.
I have a DrunkDuck account buried somewhere (which needs updating) and I think I have a TokyoPop account too (which also needs updating). Haven't been big on the promotion part, I gotta get good first, I figure.

16. Was there ever a period of time where you completely stopped drawing manga for any reason?
Sure there has. I have been doodling and coming up with ideas of manga for the past 7 years. Only started drawing recently. Post Secondary Education puts a damper on things.

17. Do you usually know the ending of your manga before you begin? Do you enjoy knowing/not knowing the ending?
For "Duh!!" I know the ending. What I don't know is the many details in the middle. I usually come up with an ending fairly early on, but sometimes, as you're working on it, your work starts developing a life of its own and it doesn't always go towards your ending. I enjoy knowing that there's a target to hit, but if I miss, then I guess I'll make that my new target when the time comes.

18. Out of all your series, which one do you feel closest to? Please describe it in a few sentences.
Well, I've got a couple projects that I want to work on. Duh!! is the closest because the story took me years to write, and it was an effort by my friends and I back in high school. Duh!! contains a lot of elements of my life and that of my co-collaborators of the story, so it strikes closest to home. The character Yuy Ren in the manga is someone I wish I could be, while at the same time, he has a lot of my characteristics.

19. Have you ever done a doujinshi? Which series was it based on?
Did a two pager on Gundam Wing before.

20. Which of your characters do you like the most?
I love all the characters. But I think my favorite is Brent (who is he and why is he not in the character profile? Because he's not that major, and comes in much much later in the story :P).
