What are some great tips you can share about drawing? I guess the greatest tip I can share is never underestimate the power of using references. They're a life saver when I'm stuck on difficult poses. 2. When did you first start to draw manga? When I was sixteen years old. 3. Name the greatest influence on your manga. Uh, not sure what's the greatest influence. A lot of TV, anime, and books are in there somewhere. 4. Has DREAM been helpful to you in any way? I'm still getting to know the amazing people in DREAM, but so far I've felt like I have a place I can come to for support and honest critique whenever I need it. So that would be a yes :) 5. What was the first manga you ever bought for yourself? Volume 27 of Ranma 1/2. I remember the specific volume number because I was doing a report on different story telling techniques and I had never bought a manga before so I bought it out of order. Ironically I was already drawing in a "manga" style YEARS before I even read a real manga. 6. Name the pens you use for drawing manga and how you use them. If you ink digitally, name the sizes and types of brushes you use and how you use them. I used to use Millennium Collection pens sized 01 and 05, but the brand was discontinued. Now I use the fine point Sharpie Pen to ink just about everything. 7. How long does it take you to do one page from planning to toning and lettering? My average is about 2 hours, but there are the occasional 5 hour pages when I'm doing a lot of action drawings or really involved toning. 8. What is the average length of your mangas? Well I've had numerous mangas that I've dropped or put on hold (either because my skills improved or because a storyline was ill-conceived). 2Kingdoms is the first serious serial manga I've drawn and the estimated page count is about 500, so I guess that's my current average. 9. After this manga, what type of manga would you like to draw next? I'm actually already drawing a second manga that has a fighting/humor/shounen sort of theme. 10. What inspired you to draw manga? The webcomics "MegaTokyo" and "9th Elsewhere" and various animes. 11. When did you first start to draw manga? When I was sixteen. (Didn't I already answer this question??) 12. Who do you say gave you the most support while drawing manga? A very good friend of mine by the name of Kasia. She has always been my number one fan and cheering me on. 13. Do you want to draw manga as a living? ABSOLUTELY. But then reality sets in... ;^; 14. Do you prefer traditional or computerized when it comes to coloring? I prefer computerized only because the color choices are endless. I like coloring with traditional markers but if I don't have the right colors or a pen runs out, I have to pay to replace it. 15. Have you ever tried to promote your manga in any way? Name some please. Well, the only ways I've promoted it is on my dA or SJ sites. I'm not really good at self-promotion... 16. Was there ever a period of time where you completely stopped drawing manga for any reason? Not that I can recall. 17. Do you usually know the ending of your manga before you begin? Do you enjoy knowing/not knowing the ending? Before I started drawing 2Kingdoms I never used to know the endings of my mangas (which is probably why I ended up dropping almost all of them). Now I plot out the general story arcs and solidify the ending before I ever draw the first page. It just makes things easier on me, knowing where the story is headed and knowing each required step to get there. 18. Out of all your series, which one do you feel closest to? Please describe it in a few sentences. My very, very first manga entitled Omoshiroi No Sakura. It was originally a story about a girl who was transported to a mystical shadow world called Omoshiroi. Once there, the girl was supposed to purify a special jewel called the Oracle of San to save the world from the demons. The plot was tenuous at best, with way too many clichéd plot points, but I've always loved the characters and revised the story three times, trying to find the best plot for them. Perhaps I'll stumble across it soon... 19. Have you ever done a doujinshi? Which series was it based on? Nope. I've never really been in to drawing doujinshi, though I've read a few good ones. 20. Which of your characters do you like the most? Yikes, hard to say. I guess my top favorite would have to be Apollo of 2Kingdoms, and at a close second is Kennedy from my FireWire series. |
